Artist in Residence

TEACHER

Artscope is searching for skilled artists with a passion for education to serve as a part-time contracted Teaching Artist in Residence. This program embeds local studio artists in area schools, providing students access to high-quality arts-education from accomplished local artists.

This position includes all the duties of a fully immersed school teacher: classroom space, curriculum planning, independent classroom leadership, and working alongside school staff.

About the position:

RESPONSIBILITIES

Art Instruction to take place at a private Catholic K–8 middle school in South St. Louis City.
Submit grades through prescribed systems 1x/trimester for 6,7 and 8 grade students.
Maintenance and ordering of an art room and art room backstock.
Develop and deliver engaging and innovative art curriculum Foster creativity and artistic expression among students, nurture their growth and confidence in the arts.
Keep accurate records of lesson plans, student progress, and other administrative tasks as required by the school.
Collaborate with classroom teachers and school staff to integrate art education into the broader curriculum.
Participation in up to 6 professional development days (not to exceed 8 hours per day) as requested by the school.
Periodically submit images of student work to Artscope
Attend scheduled Artscope meetings.
Manage classroom dynamics and maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Other tasks assigned by Artscope.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Art Education, or related field (or equivalent teaching artist experience).
Experience teaching art to Middle School Students
Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule during the academic year (August 2026–May 2027), averaging 6–10 hours per week. The current schedule is Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00–3:00 p.m., including three 50-minute art classes each day, with the possibility of additional hours through an after-school art club with the school.
Proficiency in one or more visual art forms (drawing, painting, sculpture, fiber arts, mixed media, etc.).
Strong communication, classroom management, and collaboration skills.
Ability to adapt teaching methods for diverse learners and create an inclusive, supportive environment.
Passion for inspiring creativity and student artistic expression.
Reliable transportation to assigned school sites.
Ability to pass a background check and maintain CPR certification

Teaching Artists are compensated at a competitive hourly rate that reflects their experience, expertise, and professional practice.
